University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP)

Student Health Insurance Review Committee (SHIRC)

Introduction

The Student Health Insurance Review Committee (SHIRC) is charged each year with reviewing and selecting the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP). U-SHIP must meet the health, financial, and administrative needs of a large and diverse student body. Many students may never need to use their health insurance coverage, but it provides important security in the event of a catastrophic illness or accident. The student body also includes those with chronic conditions for whom quality health insurance is crucial to academic success.

Health care costs continue to rise rapidly both nationally and for the student body. These rising costs pose a significant hardship to many students. SHIRC, composed of students, administrators, Deans of Students and physicians, tries to balance the needs of students for good comprehensive health care with financial constraints.

Each year the challenges are great. SHIRC gathers as much information as possible to make these difficult decisions. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with U-SHIP and read through the materials on this web site and give SHIRC your opinions by contacting SHIRC at shirc@uchicago.edu, or by attending one of its townhall meetings.
